If you go on a vacation in a town that has had a flood in the recent past, you will likely see signs of water damage everywhere. You will see places on the roadways that have not been repaired yet. The motel or hotel might still be making final repairs to their building. You could see the ugly rings that are left on the cement walls of the gardens that you might be taking a romantic walk in. You might even see water level lines that show how deep the flooding was.

Some of the owners will try to cover these signs with new coats of paint. Many times outside items like a gazebo or wooden lawn furniture could have been damaged and then replaced. It can be very difficult for some hotels and motels to get back in business after floods and hurricanes have past. There is always a lot of damage to be repaired inside and out and they have to make sure that their establishments can once again pass the strict codes that are placed on them.

Most of your hotels will try to cover or fix as much of the damage as they can so that it will not show, but your cheaper motels might not do as well as disguising the damage as more expensive ones. You could be able to smell the musty odor from mold that has not yet been eliminated. You might smell it stronger when you turn on the air conditioning or heating as they might not have been able to get all of the moisture out of the air vents. If you stay at a motel or hotel and discover mold anywhere, you should report it to the manager because this is an unsafe situation to stay in. You should either request another room or move somewhere else all together.

When you go on vacation or a business trip and must choose a place to stay in an area that you know was flooded in the past, do not be too bashful to ask about what measures were taken to remedy any mold that might have been a result of the incident. Even a short stay in a moldy room could stir up your allergies, break you out in a rash, cause your eyes to water, or cause nausea or upset stomach. The best thing to do if you know you are going to be staying overnight in a previously flooded region, is to check on the Internet for newly built motels or hotels or ones that plainly advertise and guarantee that they have been completely renovated after the flood.
